"My recent stay at Black Dog Farm was absolutely delightful...from being greeted by two sweet and gentle black labs upon my arrival to being awed by the beauty of the house and property.  My bedroom was small and cozy with an old stone fireplace and the most comfy bed and pillows ever, truly appreciated after many hours of driving.  Upon rising in the morning, I opened the French doors in my room to relax on the expansive balcony overlooking lush fields with horses and a goat grazing in the morning sun.  Fresh bread and muffins and good, strong coffee were waiting in the dining room, along with a sweet nudge from the labs and a super smile from my hostess, Kristen.  I loved the huge windows in the house, the beautiful stone fireplaces in every room, old wide board floors, the grand staircase that welcomed visitors and the narrow back staircase that led to my room, and the wall of French doors overlooking the patio and gardens in the kitchen/dining/sitting room.  Having driven through very historical areas over several days and reconnecting with the history of our country, my stay at the inn was a step into another time of open space and peaceful existence that we tend to forget about.  Thank you so very much, Kristen and Phil."

Welcome to Black Dog Farm Inn at Mount Welby, an Historic Country Home

Virginia is cherished for its sweeping and beautiful geography, Atlantic beaches, the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as its fascinating place in American history. The Historic Mount Welby is right in the heart of it, in the stunning Shenandoah mountain region.  Come visit this beautiful property in the heart of Virginia Wine Country just sixty miles from Washington DC.

Step back in time while staying at our lovely country estate. The property was established in the early 1800's and the home underwent a full restoration in 2004, keeping the charm of the original wood-and-stone home but updating it with modern amenities such as the gourmet kitchen, jacuzzi and barbeque, and undoing the damage of nearly two-hundred years of wear. The lovely white country home is perfectly situated on top of a small hill, offering spectacular views in every direction.

This three-story home has the charm and grandeur of a country estate and the comforts of a boutique hotel.  There are six fireplaces, a large great room, formal dining room/retreat space, gourmet kitchen, study, several porches/balconies, hot tub, and plenty of outdoor patio space.  Artfully restored, the home still has its original wood floors, high ceilings, stunning moulding detail, and stonework.

Though the house is impressive, it is the grounds you will fall in love with. The 23 acre estate includes manicured gardens, expansive patios, stables and pastures, several ponds, a babbling brook, shade trees, and panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah National Park and the historic Skyline Drive.  Visit our horses, go for a trail ride at the neighboring Marriott Ranch, visit local wineries, bring your hiking boots and hit the Appalachian Trail, or just relax on the patio or next to the fire with a good book.  It is a great place to relax or play.

Mount Welby is just sixty miles west of Washington, DC and its surrounding suburbs – close enough to commute – but with its pristine forests and old buildings, it feels a million miles away.  Located in the heart of Virginia's Wine Country with eight vineyards within five miles of the property, Mount Welby is a great place to use as a home base while visiting the surrounding area.
